Hourly wage vs cost of life — not the same thing

Hourly wage applies while you work. Life burn rate runs 24/7. Here is how to compare them without bad math.

At first glance it looks simple. You earn €30 per hour. Your life costs €3 per hour. All good? Not quite. You cannot subtract these numbers — they measure different hours. Hourly wage applies only while you work. Cost of life runs 24 hours a day. Here is a more useful comparison.

How many life hours does one work hour pay for?

Suppose:

  • net income is €30 per work hour;
  • your TimeCost is €3 per calendar life hour.

Then: €30 ÷ €3 = 10 One work hour funds about 10 hours of your current lifestyle. If you work 80 hours a month: 80 × €30 = €2,400 income. Life at €3 per hour over a standard month: 720 × €3 = €2,160 spending. There is headroom. If one work hour pays for only two life hours, the picture is very different.

How to think about purchases

Two useful lenses. Coffee for €6 at €30/hour wage costs about 12 minutes of work. The same coffee at €3/hour burn rate equals two hours of ordinary spending. Neither number is “more correct.” They answer different questions: How long must I work to earn this? and How does this purchase look against the cost of my ordinary life? TimeCost does not replace wage. It adds a second coordinate.
